Some Prim Decor

Hey there, today I thought I would give you a sneak peak into my fireplace decor.  When my hubby and I were searching for a farmhouse, one of the more important things on our "wish list" was a wood burning fireplace.  We didn't get one.  Instead, the previous owners left an electric fireplace behind so this is what we embrace.  Currently it's in the bedroom and it will be staying there for now.  But who knows...I love to move things around.  I've had the same decor on it for the last 1 1/2 years so I'm thinking it's time for a change.  If you haven't guessed it yet, I love rustic primitive stars.

This decorative piece is one that my sister-in-law Debbie gave to me when my mother passed away.  Debbie and I had gone to one of our favourite stores while she was visiting.  After we came out of the store, she surprised me with this.  I will cherish it always.

I purchased this candle box at a local craft sale a few years ago.  I love it's primitive design and it gives off a nice primitive glow.  One day I may attempt to make some myself.

Since I had the camera in my hand I thought...why not run outside and take some photos.  There were some large fluffy snowflakes coming down so I thought I'd just walk around outside a bit and have some fun snapping some photos.  This photo shows part of my front yard and the field across the road.

This is out the back, the pond is a bit lower so you can't really see it right now.  Those are fake Canadian geese you see sticking up in the center of the photo, they're actually on land in front of the pond.  The previous owner left the geese behind and we haven't decided what to do with them yet.  They may fly away to a new home come Spring or stay.  We don't have very many ducks visiting the pond throughout the summer but we do see the Great Blue Herons which is nice.  Not so nice for the gold fish though.

We have had a very mild winter this year.  Even when we have snow, it's not near as much as other years.  We recently had a thaw and lost most of the snow cover.  It appears winter has reappeared somewhat today.  Our local groundhog and weather predictor saw his shadow this week so 6 more weeks of winter lol.

Katie was outside when I took my little stroll.  I thought I'd take a picture of her this time since she wasn't able to run off.  She wasn't impressed.  She kept trying to get away from the camera...and I didn't even have the flash on this time lol.  The fur babies are starting to run when they see me coming with the camera now, too many flashes I guess.

  1. Your fireplace mantel looks charming. I like the stars and the candle box. Look at the snow around your neck of the woods, so pretty. How I wish it would snow here. If I want to play in the snow, I have to go to the mountains, about an hour away.

    Have a blessed weekend.

  4. Lovely photos ! Your pond area looks so peaceful. I like your decor very pretty ! That is one of the things that caught our eye in this old 1895 built farm house was a wood stove fireplace in the kitchen and the lovely dark pine stair case to the second floor , we also have an out door camp fire pit and a chiminea we both love the smell and sound of wood burning and how cozy the heat from it feels no matter the season lol ! Our Miggs is a camera diva always ready to strike a pose for me as for our Harley not as much lol . I only use the flash indoors if I have to most if not all my photos are taken out side cause that's were I like to be most of the time lol ! I am glad this winter has been mild and practically snowless I just hope it doesn't cause to much bug invasions come summer though as we need the perma frost to kill them off from the summer before ! Thanks for sharing , have a good weekend !

  7. Well those lovely log walls make up for the electric fireplace. You have some nice sentimental pieces on the mantel. I'm surprised there isn't a fireplace in your old home, I wonder if it was boarded over. Maybe the folks just had a woodstove originally? And that's another option for you! Love the winter scenes around the barn, we have had no snow this year. Too bad your pets are camera shy ... mine just tolerate it.

  8. Oh, I love your mantle! I'm praying for a fireplace in our next house. I had a friend yesterday who shared with me how to do a faux mantle. Even when sharing it, I didn't get it. No crafty person here! I told her she'd have to come do it for me. She agreed. Yippee!

  10. Hey there!
While your mantle is beautiful, I could not keep my eyes from staying on those gorgeous walls! How I would love to wake each morning in that room. I imagine after that long you are ready for a change on your mantle. I look forward to seeing what you will choose.

Thanks for telling us about the items on your mantle. I love to hear the story behind things. And thanks for the photos of outside. we are way low on snow this year and I worry it will be a drought Summer. Time will tell on that one.

Have a great week ahead, Darlene

  12. Hi Kelly! I really like your mantel decor...it looks like you must live in a log home! We had a log cabin for 12 years but sold it about a year and a half ago. We love rustic decor. Lovely, lovely snowy photos too! Thank you for dropping by my blog and leaving your sweet comment! I hope you have a good week ahead!

  13. Kelly, I love metal stars too. I like the way you display them on the fireplace mantle. I don't have a fireplace so I just hang mine wherever. Your yard is fabulous!! It looks like something off a postcard. Enjoy your piece of heaven in the country :)

  15. Love your stars and candle holder, that was a sweet gift from Debbie and always good to see that reminder. Your snow pictures are so pretty, we are actually getting some snow fall as I write this, they are saying about 1/2 an inch, not much but it is pretty big flakes so that is neat to see. We have had it very mild this year too.

  16. I so enjoyed seeing photos from your home, both inside and out. I also love barn stars and the candle box is just lovely. I imagine it gives off a nice glow (I have a weakness for candles and little lamps).

Oh, and congratulations on your month of blogging! I'm so glad you decided to start this blog. :)

  18. Kelly, loved the decor, very very nice! I must admit at first glance I thought those geese were real!!! They look great sitting there! Nice piece of land you have, very peaceful!

  19. Your mantel vignette is very nice - I love the stars and the candle box. I always have such a hard time decorating the mantel - mine looks very sad right now. You have the prettiest views with all the lovely trees and fencing. My pets hate the flash, too. I keep it turned off, but they are still suspicious :) Hope your week is lovely. Hugs xo Karen

  20. I love your style of decor! The rustic wooden stars look so nice on your fireplace mantel. We don't have a fireplace or a mantle, but would love to! I also loved the saying on the plaque that Debbie gave you, a wonderful thought to display! And your Katie is a real sweetie! Our animals don't care for the camera much either, although they have gotten more used to it as I do take a lot of pictures of them, lol! Hope you are having a wonderful day :)

  23. First of all, I love the irony/paradox of having a custom fireplace made from wood! Second, the mementos on iron stands really add a special touch. It's awesome that this type of home décor addition adds such richness and enjoyable space to the place you call home. Your hubby is a real gem for helping you with this project.

  24. Hi Lindsey, thank you for dropping in. The fireplace is actually just an electric one but it's definitely better than not having one. My hubby is definitely a great guy to have around. Enjoy the remainder of your day!
